Seated in the heart of the soon to be metropolitan Kochi, Govt. Model Engineering College, Thrikkakara is about to set sail on yet another daring venture as part of Excel 2014. Sowing the seeds of a greener Kochi in the midst of urbanisation, we bring forth an organic farming campaign sponsored by the Rotary Club on the 15th of August 2014 as the flagship of Excel. Organic farming is a system which avoids or largely excludes the use of synthetic inputs such as fertilizers, pesticides, hormones, feed additives etc and to the maximum extent feasible rely upon crop rotations, crop residues, animal manures, off-farm organic waste and biological system of nutrient mobilization and plant protection for increased sustainable production in an eco friendly pollution free environment. Thus adding more dimensions to the green Excel logo.
Agriculture happens to be the economic backbone of India. We commemorate the 67th Independence day of our country with an organic farming initiative launching the campaign with talks on the benefits of organic farming followed by a workshop on how to start/maintain an organic farm. Foreign interns of AIESEC will also share their experiences on similar campaigns conducted by them in Kochi including the extremely popular “Project Go Green”. Organic kits from the Krishi Bhavan will be distributed among 20 families in the locality as part of the initiative. Dedicated students from the college shall volunteer in starting up organic farms in these households and play a pivotal role in the follow up of these farms in the future. The student community will offer their complete support to AIESEC in their project by spreading awareness in all schools and colleges in the locality. Starting organic farms in our college and others colleges and schools in the district will be the next step of our propaganda.
